The aim is to develop component-specific heat insulation coatings and
structures of the combustion chamber of the diesel engine.
Suitable materials will be identified and the structure of coatings
and constructions will be optimised. Testing will be carried out in
laboratory conditions and in test engines.
The project is being carried out at two research institutions:
- Tampere University of Technology, Dept of material science
(development of heat resistant and corrosion proof materials and
coatings)
- Helsinki University of Technology, Internal Combustion Engine
Laboratory (development of components, design, and engine technology)
Two industrial partners are actively taking part in the project:
- Wärtsilä Technology
- Patria Finavitec
Following two figures present a model of a medium speed diesel engine piston
with a ceramic coating, and a photo of a coating process by plasma
spray.
Resulting technology will help in designing efficient and
environmentally friendly combustion engine utilizing a diesel
combustion system.
