The aim of the study is to control combustion in the diesel engine
with the aid of an exactly controlled fuel spray in a way that high
efficiency and small emissions are achieved. Characteristics and
control alternatives of present electrically controlled systems and
are studied, and tools for the dimensioning and choice of
diesel-injection systems of various types and sizes will be developed
by using mathematical modelling and simulation as well as
measuring.
Injection systems based on new common-rail technology and electrical
control systems governing the entire engine are the key components to
reach the object.
A fast injection control valve for medium speed engines is one of
these components under development. Valve is based on a piezoelectric
actuator.
Project is led by Tampere
University of Technology/IHA (Institute of Hydraulics and
Automation) and industrial partners are Wärtsilä Corporation, Sisu Diesel Inc, Mitron Oy and Tampere Multivisions Oy
Project is part of national ProMOTOR technology programme
1999-2003. The project is being supported by the National Technology
Agency TEKES.
