The objective is to study mixing of fuel and air in diesel combustion to
achieve controlled combustion with low emissions. In-cylinder flow field and
fuel spray play major roles in controlling diesel combustion. The understanding
of the dominating physical phenomena contributes combustion development and our
common efforts towards environmentally friendly clean diesel engines. A new
medium-speed single-cylinder experimental engine will be used for the
measurements.
Both the experimental air-flow field and spray research are covered by this
project. Measured cases are modeled with CFD to make comparisons and evaluate
accuracy of modeling. Work starts with a static flow rig where intake flow have
a strong swirl and turbulens, which is a difficult case for CFD. Measurements
of fuel spray will start with non evaporating spray and continue in EVE
research engine at real operating conditions up to 200 bar cylinder pressures.
