Objective of the project is a significant decrease in emissions of large diesel
engines by developing new combustion techniques. With these techniques in
addition to conventional diesel fuel, new environmentally friendly synthetic or
renewable fuels can be used. Decrease of emissions is a vital competive factor
and is essential at environmental and sustainable development of view.
New combustion technique is based on premixed air and fuel with compression
ignition. In additon to controlling the mixture formation, peak temperatures in
the combustion will be kept low by developing the diesel process. With premixed
combustion we can avoid formation of small particles and with controlled low
combustion temperatures we avoid formation of nitrogen oxides. High efficiency
is achieved by diesel process. Research methods used are laser based optical
diagnostics and computational fluid mechanics.
