The objective of the 'Reduction of Particulate Emissions in Compression
Ignition Engines' project was to evaluate the state-of-the-art in PM
emission reducing techniques for compression ignition engines. The
results of the project are published as a literature survey.
The project was a joint research effort of the Helsinki University of
Technology, Internal Combustion
Engine Laboratory and the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT),
Engines and Vehicles, research group.
The project was financially supported by the National Technology Agency
(TEKES) through the FINE
research program, and by three industrial companies:
Wärtsilä, Sisu Diesel and Aumet.
The literature survey presents:
- an overview of present particulate emission reducing techniques
- the current and upcoming legislation on diesel engines
- the particulate formation theory
- the influence of engine design on particulate formation
- the effects of different types of fuel
- exhaust gas after-treatment
- alternative working cycles and their influence on particulate
formation
The following parts of the literature survey are available in Portable
Document Format from
