The currently available CFD tools, that have
mainly been applied to passenger car or heavy-duty engines so far, will be
applied to marine engine simulations. The various submodels, whose
applicability is commonly verified only for smaller engines running at higher
rpm, will be extended so as to confront the problems of the larger length and
time scales as well as lower error tolerance observed in large marine engines
running at lower rpm. Moreover, they will be refined to account for fuel
quality effects appropriately, since these are playing a non-negligible role
on marine engines. Finally, emission formation models have to be extended in
order to allow a better quantitative prediction of gaseous pollutants and to
include the simulation of particulate and smoke emissions.
